Agharta została nagrana późnym popołudniem w 1975 roku na jednym z dwóch koncertów, na których Miles Davis wystąpił w Osaka Festival Hall w Japonii. Występował ze swoim septetowym: flecistą i saksofonistą Sonnym Fortune, basistą Michaelem Hendersonem, perkusistą Al Fosterem, perkusistą Jamesem Mtumem, gitarzystą Reggiem Lucasem i Pete Cosey, który grał na gitarze, syntezatorze i perkusji.

Wyprodukowane i nagrane przez Teo Macero, cztery pozornie nieustrukturyzowane segmenty albumu podkreślają zgranie całego zespołu. Unikają oni melodii i harmonii na rzecz kombinacji riffów, skrzyżowania polirytmów i zorientowanych na funk groove'ów.

Album zyskał uznanie retrospektywne jako ważna i wpływowa płyta jazz-rockowa.
